Who’s guiding you?
I recently got back from Soberski, the alcohol-free ski retreat my brother Ben founded. It was an incredible week packed full of learning, listening and guiding, but my craving when I got back was to be guided through a class.
I taught a class just yesterday, and a yoga teacher came. We spoke after class about the total joy it is as a teacher, to be taught in return. That’s what I love about this practice, that you’re forever a student, forever evolving and growing in directions that feel intuitive.
The need to be held in space, to be nurtured and to drop in fully to a practice doesn’t do a vanishing act when you graduate to guide others. Pouring from an empty cup as a teacher often leads to less confidence, doubt in your ability or a longing to be on the receiving end.
I feel privileged to share yoga with everyday athletes, but being a student of this ancient, transformative practice is also a privilege.
